Summer camps have always offered a range of fun activities for youths and teens, ranging from trips to the ballpark or amusement park, arts and crafts, swimming lessons, and playful participation in sports and other recreational activities. According to Health and Wellness author, Morris Cohen, camp experiences offer children a different learning environment than school; an opportunity to grow their social skills and expand their friendship circle. Cohen states that “camp is a key opportunity for kids to develop both sides of their social intelligence by offering them a way to practice becoming adept at socializing by offering them access to many new people and environments.” Much like in academics and athletics, practice leads to improvement – the more children can practice their social intelligence, the more smoothly they can incorporate the skills for the rest of their lives! The benefits of summer camp are endless for campers and for their staff. The summer camp ecology includes Campers, varying in age and ability level, Counselors, typically high-school or college-aged, Counselors-in-Training (CIT), Activity Specialists, and Directors – all contributing to the overall success and positive-nature of the camp experience.
